Our group investigated chapter three which looked at using websites in the classroom that were popular as apposed to pre-selected teacher sites.
From my understanding the mindset 1 classroom would consist of the teacher integrating the use of technology into the classroom as a tool to introduce or reinforce a current lesson.
The mindset 2 classroom would give the students the flexibility to construct their own learning from the process and practice using technology. The students select and interact with technology to construct meaning and knowledge.
How Websites can be used in Mindset 1 and Mindset 2
My math students were in the computer lab engaging in a few sites we had bookmarked earlier in the year. (mindset 1) A couple of students had clicked on a lower grade level answering questions much too easy for them. Another day a couple of students’ were trying to see who could get the most wrong. Now some of this was showing off for their classmates but, I now see that this was my opportunity to have let them take on their own learning. (Mindset 2) They should have gone to a search engine and found a math site that they deemed interesting and added it to the class resources. However, I didn’t do that. The students were given the speech to use the websites properly or they would have to come off the computers. They did get back to work but I missed a prime chance to let the students take on their own learning and knowledge building. I am working hard to make sure I don’t let these authentic learning opportunities slip by again.
Thank you for your response Kim.
I've been exactly where you were that day in the computer lab. However, being aware of how we approached a situation, and then realizing how we could have done it differently, is indeed evidence of higher level thinking on our part. We now must begin the process of trying to allow Mindset two activities to happen more often. We can talk the talk about these mindsets, but we need to learn how to walk the walk. I need some practical examples of how this can be done, and Kim, I thank you for showing me an avenue where this can be done.
