Hello Keith, I found your comments and questions most interesting and provide much to debate and talk about. Like every institution in our society libraries are experiencing a time of transition--I don't think the barcode access point will be long lived. This will change very quickly just as moves to educate children online is changing--note VSB add that Grades 10, 11, and 12's can register for free to complete a wide array of courses. Things are changing--however, some things will continue--libraries did not contribute to democracy--they came out of democratic ideals---especially the notion of free libraries.

Hence support for Open source--access to information will be supported by library types as well as by intellectuals who want to share knowledge for purposes of creating knowledge. Definitely not the corporate model of ownership for profit. Promoting reading, teaching reading, contributing to preserving and sharing of culture will continue to be library roles--especially archiving knowledge, saving it for future use and also setting up systems for retrieval. This will require Google-like thinking and Amazon like expertise that we can't even imagine--but there will be a library role--just rather difficult to conceive of.
Not sure what I am really trying hard to say--but I will do some thinking and reading. Thanks heaps for sharing your thinking.

Hi Keith Yes I think we could use this Ning space for great discussions with the LLED 301s.
I would be most interested in trying it out.

Democratic slippage?

With more and more North American children turning towards the Internet as their first (and often only) source of information, I wonder if the current design of public and school libraries will make these bastions of democracy less of an influence in the shaping of our children's democratic futures? Decreasing budgets make it hard for libraries to reach out electronically to these children. Really - REALLY - long user names (often 12 or more digit bar codes) make it hard for children to remember… Continue
