Hi Marlene I received your e-mail reponding to my post on the Kapitzke article. Thank you for your comments. I posted my final reflection and assignment onto My Page so I hope you can access them. OK, so I'm playing catch up today. I just finished my blog posting on Kapitzke's Outformation article and can't seem to access the Whose Community article via Moodle. I'm going to go ahead with my final reflection and may edit it once I've read the second Kapitzke article...

Hello Dr. Marlene Asselin,
I've added my reflections on the two articles by C. Kapitzke and a Final reflection. I wonder if you are able to find them. I have you listed as "a friend", but don't know if you are able to view my posts, as there seems to have been some problems with this. I know you are super busy. If you find that you can't read the above to responses, please let me know. I hope you have had a great week with our Ray. He's wonderful, isn't he. We feel so lucky to have him here at UPEI.
All the best,
Therese

I have made several postings on My Blog, they show on my page, and I have received your message. You are also listed as My Friend so I can't imagine why you haven't seen them.

Hi Marlene,
I am afraid I may be behind on my postings!
I have not been able to discuss anything really on ibrary, since I have not found anyone's discussion on the new literacies. However I have written a discussion for this and am posting it on my blog page. I look forward to a response.
Talk to you soon,
Mel C

Profile Information

Hometown:
Port Moody BC
About Me:
I love to combine travel and work.I enjoy collaborating with colleages from around the world. I am particularly interested in finding ways that teacher librarians can productively respond to the current challenges posed by technology, economics, culture, and literacy. I am also the mother of four children -- each of whom continues to teach me about what is important for meaningful learning to happen.
School Name & Location
University of British Columbia
Vancouver BC Canada
Teaching Assignment
I teach courses in literacy and school librarianship at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I coordinate our Facuty's teacher librarianship programs (,http://www.lled.educ.ubc.ca/programs/libe/index.html) and I am currently Deputy Head of the Department of Language and Literacy Education. Some of my work is listed at http://www.lled.educ.ubc.ca/faculty/asselin.htm
Favorite Authors/Illustrators
I used to be totally immersed in children's literature but have unhappily drifted away due to other work demands. My favorites "back in the day" were folktales and fairytales from all cultures. As an early childhood educator, I found it very powerful to group these kinds of stories around inquiry themes like Transformations and Beginnings. It was natural to add nonfiction within these themes once you had a core group of traditional literature stories. Now that all my children are grown up and my job is not dependent on using children's literature, I read "adult literature" exclusively. I prefer literature that is relaxing or that really takes me away from everyday life. I actually surprised myself and liked a lot of the Oprah books. And I like British mysteries like those by Peter Robinson. And I like unque pieces like Belle Canto, Memory Keeper's Daughter, I Know this much is True, Holy Cow, and The Skin of the Lion to name a few. I got hooked on Irish romantic stories when I went to Ireland and each time I go I pick up more as they are titles unavailable here. I love books set in places that I've been. I just wish I had more time to indulge in my preferred reading!!
Best Things about our School Library
Our school library is actually our department library -- and our Faculty of Education library - both of which fully model how school libraries support teaching and learning in innovative ways.
My Hopes & Dreams for our School Library
That it continue to grow as a demonstration center of best practice and state of the art resouces, both print and digital. That its programs are state of the art responses to today's learners and to new conceptions of knowledge.

Pedgagogy 2.0 article

This article was just published in an excellent online (of course!) journal called Innovate. It speaks clearly to our work in literacy and learning theory. You will need to join to access the full article but it's free and there are many other outstanding articles.
Dave Cormier tackles the difficult theme of knowledge, using the
metaphor of the rhizome, a plant with no center and no clear boundary,
to describe the way knowledge is created in the context of Web 2.0
technologies. "Knowledge as neg… Continue

Dan Pink - part 2

I subscribe to eSchool News which is a very useful source of news for teacher librarians. Today the second part of the Dan Pink interview was posted at http://www.eschoolnews.com/video-center/esn-techwatch/index.cfm?i=53708;_hbguid=52465331-a240-494c-8517-8527ff20c02e
He has much to say to teacher librarians about automony, assessment and the change process.

Welcome to Part 3 of ED614SL - Theories of Learning: Literacy

Welcome everyone to the third part of ED614SL - Theories of Learning: Literacy. I have learned quite a bit about you already through Ray and through browsing the recent group discussions under Ross Todd’s leadership. I have been impressed with the scope and depth of your developing knowledge about learning theories and information literacy. I have been particularly inspired by your ready abilities to re-view your own teaching in light of new understandings. The mission statements you developed w… Continue

Emerging Technologies: Tag clouds in the blogsphere

I just stumbled upon this helpful article succintly introducing new learning technologies that are most relevant to library programs -- http://llt.msu.edu/vol10num2/emerging/default.html

It gives ample information about tagging and semantic webs, blogs and online writing tools, etc without getting too technical. The last section focusses on how to optimize these technologies to support development of new and multiple lite
